The Poitou donkey, commonly known as the Poitou donkey, is a very old breed of donkey native to Poitou, in western France. Very easily recognizable by its characteristic coat of unusual length in an equine, it is a large donkey with strong bones

The realization of an old dream
The breeding of Poitou donkeys started with us in 1999, with the arrival of Hirondelle.
Since 1998, goats have occupied our daily lives, and since 1999 these large hairy animals, forever associated with the history of our region which they have made rich and renowned.
We love their strength and their primitive aspect behind which hide calm, tenderness and balance.
They are wonderful companions.
To give meaning to our passion, we wanted our efforts to help save this endangered breed (there were only 20 males and 24 females more or less inbred in 1977). We therefore made the choice to breed only animals registered in the stud-book of the breed.
This contains 2 books:
Book A, which lists animals descended from the original herd.
Book B, open to the need to bring new blood and concerns animals descended from Spanish or Portuguese donkeys (whose type was close to the Poitou donkey), and protruded by purebred stallions, in the part of an absorption crossing program.
It seemed to us as essential to preserve the existing genetic capital as to expand its diversity, which is why we count animals included in each of these books.
We live on the farm, the meadows are contiguous to our house, so it is easy for us to devote daily three to four hours to feeding (fodder, concentrates and supplements) and to the day-to-day care of our donkeys which we also trim.
The reproduction of our animals is the object of all our care:
We breed our donkeys on average every 2 years. They are bred by approved purebred stallions belonging to National Studs or to private breedings, chosen according to their genetics and their physical characteristics, but also to their character, this within the framework of the mating plan defined by the Interregional Park of the Marais Poitevin.
With Qualif de Ouismes, we practice riding in hand, both with the “compatible” donkeys of our herd and with the females entrusted to us.
Finally, we watch our donkeys at night to assist them during the donations. It also allows us to be the first contact of the newborn …
Our omnipresence finds both its justification and its reward in the behavior of our animals: they are gentle, cuddly and confident.
